RE: Tow Vehicle w/ Best Back Seat for Passengers - Ram Mega Cab?

I wonder what the load capacity is on this one? https://i.imgur.com/xBRHcIVl.jpg This thread had me thinking about his NICE monster of a truck. RAM had a concept truck the "LongHauler" In smaller states he could be entering a third one before exiting the first one! Have not seen him around the TDR site for quite a while!

RE: I'm curious to know what you would do?

I am glad I have my last truck, because the prices today are crazy high. I got 9500 off when I bought my 2015 Ram 3500 4x4 Laramie in Sept 2015. And I got 2K off the 2021 F150 and more than I paid for the 2020 Edge ST we had bought 15 months earlier as a trade in.

our resident expert on on all things truck(HP, torque rise, towing etc) I'm not sure I'd call him a resident expert on all things, when he has clearly never owned a truck ling enough to do simple routine maintenance... This comes to mind! https://i.imgur.com/iHeUfhal.jpg

Did anyone easy get a chuckle out of this thread, in that our resident expert on on all things truck(HP, torque rise, towing etc) starts a thread asking what people think about regarding the purchase of a new truck!

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

"Where is it compared? When have you used a gas engine, with same displacement, on same hill with same load?" It's kind of a mute point. The exhaust brake has become a standard feature on HD diesels. A feature that works well and is a real difference maker. A feature that HD gassers simply don't have. There is no comparison to be made. We don't need to get into load, displacement or any other factor. The gasser does not have an exhaust brake. Ultimately no exhaust break is a deal breaker and a major shortcoming of a gas engine What he ^^^^^ said!

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

The BANKS exhaust brake I put on the 2001.5 worked great for the 12K+ load I towed with that truck for 14 years There is no doubt exhaust brakes work. If you do turn it off, then back on while going down a hill. And nobody that has ever compared can say diesel, with no exhaust brake, or it not functioning, will claim gas engine does not slow more. What nobody wants to compare is normally functioning gas engine to like sized and loaded diesel with exhaust brake. The Cummins for some unknown reason pretty much freewheel without the exhaust brake on, where as the V8 Duramax and Powerstroke provide a degree of grade braking.

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

With some jurisdictions outlawing "Jake brakes", IE the use of velves to get compression braking, exhaust valves do a similar effect. With out the noise issue. I had a couple of mid '70s Macks, 1 had factory installed jake, the other had add on exhaust brake. Driving and maintaining them, I can say for sure they don't really have similar effect. Jake far and away better. In the HD market, for likely 25 years a compression brake has become pretty standard. And while the laws about compression brakes are on the books most engines make about the same noise pulling hard as slowing. Inside cab noise standards might of caused a redesign. And most operators understanding the engine is designed to work best with mufflers also reduces that problem. On this site, any time somebody asks about using spark plug engine to move their RV, 1 of the next 3 replies will be YOU WILL BE IN THE TRUCK LANE ALL THE TIME! In a day's drive, the time spent going up or down a steep enough to really slow you will not reduce average speed by much. Either most can't do the math, or the fact somebody passes them is a insult to manhood. With all the issues with diesel emission systems, and cost to repair, not sure I would want to go that way. I owned a 1993 RAM diesel, a 2001.5 RAM diesel, and a 2015 RAM diesel, and loved all three for vary reasons. The 2015 with Aisin transmission was a great towing machine at 24,500 combined weight. The BANKS exhaust brake I put on the 2001.5 worked great for the 12K+ load I towed with that truck for 14 years.

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

Pretending a gaz engine descends the mountain as well as a diesel is misleading. NO it is a dangerous statement, as some novice might think I am good to go. I wonder Blt2ski has even owned a diesel with an exhaust brake. I know he has towed around the NW with older equipment.

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

Regardless how them 2 TFL jokers do their “tests” there is ZERO chance that ANY gasser pickup has anywhere near the holding power of a comparable diesel with a good exhaust brake. Not even worth discussing. Not even if you’re trying to blow the pistons out backwards at 6000rpms in 3rd gear, “grade braking.” Again, anywhere from Denver to Appalachia/Canada to Mexico, a gasser will serve just fine. Not many kill ya hills in fly over states. Well... this thread imploded quicker than I thought. Not a single soul is saying that a gas engine brake is anywhere as strong as a diesel exhaust brake. I'm just trying to get real world users to give their experience. But typical RV.net, it goes sideways immediately. Appreciate the consistency guys. I'll just try different forums and hope that people can read and stay on point... Good luck, if you try hard enough someone will support your flawed hope that a big gas engine will hold back a heavy load going down steep mountain passes. I am not a fan of Ford's method of using the service and trailer brakes to hold back a load without many knowing that the truck could overheat it's brakes and the trailers brakes without the operator being aware of it.

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

I do not think much of TFLs exhaust brake reviews. They have a narrow set of "rules" for it. If the truck doesn't fare well under their rules, it gets a bad score...The do not read the manuals to see how each trucks EB is setup to work. One can quibble about not liking how a trucks EB is setup to work, but they should not be penalizing such trucks for poor performance, when if operated according to their manuals the results are fine. I agree. I towed at 24,500 combined with my 2015 RAM 3500 and always ran the exhaust brake in that manual mode and selected my descent gear myself and seldom had to use my service brakes. We are talking Western states and many passes to cross. The thing about relying on the truck to do it all, is it does that have eyes and the ability to see and process what is occurring up ahead.

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

Why get rid of a 2015 RAM? I loved my Laramie and would have kept it if I had know how quickly my wife of 40 years was going to step off the planet. ALS is a terrible disease. My Ram is an 8 year old Tradesman, with awful stock seats that are murder on my back and butt for longer drives. I'm thinking my next truck might need to be a dually (but not sure yet). I currently have a company vehicle that I can drive for work and around town, but I retire from my current job in less than 3 years. I've got my next job lined up, which is fully remote but will require me driving my truck more. When I retire from this job, we are hoping to do longer trips and staying at destinations longer. I'll have the time to go slower up the big mountains, and I'll be spending more time at the beach or lake and driving the truck to the supermarket, etc. At this point I'm just doing my due diligence. I got fussed at in another thread for planning ahead, but I'm a planner. I might determine that a gas engine just won't work for my towing needs, but until I do the research, I just don't know... you know? Yeah, I drove a couple tradesman's before buying the Laramie. And the seats were like setting on an apple crate! Short term go get seats out of a higher trim level. Our Laramie had bucket seats with the full center console and we loved it for traveling back and forth between Wa and Az. 2015 to 2021. Now a tidbit #1 rule from "me Again", go into retirement with paid off newer vehicles, RVs and other toys.

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

I towed a 16K 5th with my 2015 RAM 3500 Aisin with a 24,500 combined weight full timing for two years. I would not have wanted to towed it with a gasser. Pulled hard going up grades and was great going down mountain passes, with nice cool service brakes in case one had to quick stop. Why get rid of a 2015 RAM? I loved my Laramie and would have kept it if I had know how quickly my wife of 40 years was going to step off the planet. ALS is a terrible disease.

RE: Dodge 3500 towing heavy

the 17in that i bought have a load rating of 3086 Pounds for one that should be enough for the camper then right. when i frist bought the truck i did put air bags on the back to help i would like to put an Exhaust break on it eventually In contrast the 265/75R16's on my 2001.5 RAM 2500 had a 3414 pound rating or 628 pounds more per axle.

RE: Dodge 3500 towing heavy

Redeeming things: Trailer is a tripe axle, which tend to have lighter pin weights. Negative things: 17" wheels and tires, the unwanted step child of truck tires in modern times. Tow it once and see if you want to spend money to upgrade suspension, wheels and tires, or invest in a new truck. Tranny will be on the list also. The 48RE can be rebuilt to be strong, just another 4-6K. If it was me, I would look for a 2015-16 SRW Aisin tranny 3500 ram. You get a 7K rear axle rating, exhaust brake and lots of power to tow the trailer. I towed a 39'+ 16k fifth wheel with a 2015 SRW 3500 4x4 and it did great.

RE: 2023 Power Stroke vs 2023 Ram Cummins Towing Challenge

I think the secrete to better grade braking is electric axles on the trailers. Charge the batteries on the way down and help pull on the way up. I do not think many owners realize that Fords going down a hill on cruise control or ACC that the truck applies the service brakes including the trailer brakes. This could lead to overheating the trailer brakes without the driver realizing it. I am not sure if the others GM and RAM are the same now. I sure miss my 2015 RAM's exhaust brake going down passes and hills(always had nice cool service brakes) on my yearly commute to AZ and back to Wa. https://i.imgur.com/zEgHlvpl.jpg

RE: 2023 Power Stroke vs 2023 Ram Cummins Towing Challenge

I do not think more gears in a RAM/Cummins will change towing performance very much. What it could provide is truck that can perform equally as a towing monster and a freeway cruise. My 2015 with Aisin and 3.42 gears was a freeway cruiser, that towed at 24,500 lbs combined just fine. As it is now, if one wants really heavy duty towing you go for 4.10 gears. So with more gears you could have your cake and eat too. What occurs on the IKE will not change that much, and I6 is just what it is, a quarter horse not a race horse.
